Applying for a Ration Card in Bangalore

This information is good for applying for an APL (Above Poverty Line) card for North Bangalore.

What you will need:

1. A mobile phone number
2. Location of the Photo Bio processing centre in your area
3. Introducer - a neighbour with a new ration card in your area who is ready to introduce you
4. Cooking Gas connection customer number and dealer name
5. Electricity Connection RR number
6. Details of your family members (Name, Date of Birth)
7. Documents Required:
a. Photo ID Proof
b. Address Proof
c. Latest Electricity Bill

How to go about it:
Phase 1: Submitting your details to the Government.
1. Identify the Photo Bio Processing centre in your area and find the number to which you will have to send the SMS for registration.  For some areas, the number is 9212357123. You will need to send the following SMS: RCNEW <Full Name>.  Also find the timing in which they operate. Some centres operate on Sundays too.
2. You will get a response typically from TD-KA-FCS with a Token Number and a Security Code. Please retain this SMS for use at the Photo Bio processing centre.
3. Approach the Bio processing centre with the documents they require, your entire family and the introducer.
4. The centre will typically have two areas - one for entering information and another for taking the photo and capturing your thumb scan. They will also scan your documents and upload them.
5. You will be given a confirmation slip and a receipt for Rs.50/- for private bio processing centres. In a government owned one, the processing fees is Rs.20/- The private ones are known to charge more (Rs.100 or more)
This ends the first phase.

Phase 2: Getting the Ration Card
1. After your details are verified, you will get an SMS typically from LM-KARFCS stating that your Ration Card has been processed and you can collect it from their centre. The text is typically in Kannada (Kannada words in english script). A sample text could be:
Nimma Ration Card arji sankhya <token number> dated <request date> anumodiside. Aahara kacheri: BANGALORE <SUBDIVISION> officege bandu nimma Ration Card padeyiri.
2. Visit the Food and Civil Supplies office in your area with the confirmation slip and an ID card. Find out the timings of the office.
3. The personnel there will provide you with a printed ration card after charging your Rs.20/-

FAQ
  1. What do I do if I have not received a confirmation SMS (Phase 2, part 1)?
Answer: Visit the food and civil supplies office and inform the personnel there. They might be able to help you.  For the office in Vyalikaval (11th Cross, near the Police Station), please try to visit the office between 10:30 am to 12:00 noon or 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm. Please take a photo copy of the confirmation slips and submit it at the office. Though the need for this manual intervention is not understood, the confirmation SMS comes days after this process.
